Modly Chic: “Beach Day”

“Since I live in the Midwest, getting to the beach is a little difficult. But here we spend time at the crowded public pools or in the local public parks. Since I’m not all about sporting a bathing suit in the middle of a grassy park…
I tend to go in shorts and a lose but fun t-shirt; that way if my friends and I get the sudden urge to run to FroYo or grab an iced coffee I can do that easily without scandalizing the locals. And to be honest, I’m pretty practical about these kind of events. Within an hour my hair will be pulled back in a slick pony tail and it will stay that way the rest of the day.”

Modly Chic: “Fashion Event”

“I’m hoping to make it to New York Fashion Week for the first time this year, so up to this point the fashion events I have been to have either been presentations I have given to local high school students, or small scale fashion shows the magazine I worked for here planned. Either way, jeans were a staple.
But I always wanted to dress them up, make them look current and a little edgy. This shirt, which is ultra comfy and so fun, was the perfect starting point. I then added the long draping vest and the outfit was nearly complete. I opted for only a few accessories in order to play up the hemlines on the vest and shirt. And, of course, a pair of killer heels makes any outfit complete.”

Modly Chic: “Date Night”

“I admit, this is not actually a ‘date’ date. It’s actually my little brother. As the oldest of a large family it’s hard to get one-on-one time with all of them the few times I’m in town every year. So when I go home I try to plan little excursions with each of them. We go to Starbucks, hit a bucket of balls at a driving range, grab lunch out, whatever.
As for the outfit I’m always big into pairing a bright tank top with some kind of jacket. This gray one is a funny piece. It looks good with certain outfits and horrendous with others. I think it actually works with this. These jeans… I can’t sing their praises enough. They are actually long enough to wear with heels and they are oh-so comfortable! That NEVER happens for me.”

“Since I am a home-based freelance writer, I don’t have a normal desk job which would require me to dress up. But from time to time I do give fashion and media presentations to various groups.
These events require me to dress in business attire while keeping my creative edge. I need people to listen to me and find me fashion forward without having my outfit do all the talking for me. To get that look I try to go for basic colors (usually black) and then some kind of statement piece. This worked perfectly for a recent presentation.”

“My style is excessively girly, with the teeniest bit of an edge and a definitive vintage vibe. I love bright colours, so mixing denim and bright red (complete with bright red lips) is one of my favourite looks. The floaty and ruffly blouse, courtesy of Plastic Island, exemplifies my personal style and this full but short skirt with added Sidecca belt, covers my worst “bits” (big bum and large thighs) and accentuates my best (little waist and long legs).
The vintage inspired shoes, from Seychelles, add some extra colour to the look, the actual vintage Capezio purse adds another pop of red and the beads, chains and bangles pull it all together. Fun, flirty and honestly I felt quite fabulous.”

“Despite living in Los Angeles, making it out to the beach is a rarity, and as much as I love being by the ocean I find myself on top of a skyscraper in Downtown Los Angeles far more frequently. The particular skycraper is The Standard Hotel in Downtown LA, complete with a lush pool.
“As for what I’m wearing, I have been so pleased with the resurgence of one piece swimsuits, especially since lack of exercise and love of food has left me with a rather soft belly! This beautiful suit, courtesy of Kooey, is really breathtaking: the ruffles and the bright colour draw attention and I’ve lost count of the compliments I have received while wearing it. Pairing it with white cut offs, chunky wedges and cat eye sunglasses gives the look a vintage vibe, late Seventies, early Eighties chic and also serves to hide my lumps!”

“On the rare occassion that I do get to go on a date with my husband (honestly our preference is usually take out and a bottle of wine than a night on the town), I do like to get dressed up, even if we’re just headed to the movies – I’m old fashioned like that. This outfit is sweet, and a little sexy but stays true to my own aesthetic: feminine and whimsical.”

As someone who wears many hats (literally and figuratively) nailing down a work look was surprisingly difficult for me. I decided to don my photographer hat for this challenge, the logic being out of all the jobs I have, working as a photographer is the job where I am required to drastically change my everyday style. This is mainly a comfort factor, I’m the kind of photographer that will contort themselves in a manner that would make the greatest yogi jealous in order to get a perfect shot.
It’s not unusual to see me rolling in dirt or elbows down and bottoms up and running around set when I’m working. Therefore these stretchy XCVI jeggings are perfect, and the loose AStars shirt allows me the freedom to move. Comfy shoes like these Chinese Laundry sandals are key and jangly accessories have to be kept to a minimum so not to distract or get in the way.
